From the Equal Justice Initiative
Racial segregation had a long and enduring history in America, supported by courts, laws, and elected officials. The pervasive effects of that legacy are still felt today.
Segregation in America re-examines the civil rights era by focusing on the people and powers that opposed racial equality, to better understand the challenges of that era still before us today. Senators, governors, judges, writers, ministers, and other figures boldly led the movement to maintain segregation through their words and deeds. There are thousands of monuments in America that glorify the era of enslavement and its legacy. Many monuments were erected to maintain white supremacy long after the Civil War. Video footage from the segregation era documents the millions of white Americans who arrested, beat, bombed, and terrorized civil rights demonstrators, including children.REPORT
